Quran Learning And Teaching

The Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah Be upon him) said:

“People of the Qur’an are the people of Allaah and his own.”

“The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-Bukhari]

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه)) البخاري

  • Why is it important to learn Quran?

Quran is the words of Allah Subhanau Wa Ta’ala (Glorified Is He The Most High). It is the guidance and the light of our lives. Therefore; it is very important for every Muslim and Muslima to learn it, ponder deeply upon it and live according to its guidance.

There are loads of Hadiths in the Pure Sunnah and Ayaat in the Holy Quran that encourage the believers to study and memorize Quran by heart.

Four Verses from the Holly Quran:

“Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish – That He may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative.”35-29:30

“Then we caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants; and among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah. That [inheritance] is what is the great bounty.”( 35:32)

“But those who hold fast to the Book and establish prayer – indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.”( 7:170)

“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.”( 17:9)

Eleven Hadiths from the Pure Sunnah:

‘Uthmaan, (may Allah be pleased with him), said that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-Bukhari]

As an authentic Hadith in At-Tirmithee proves:

“Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.”

‘Aa’ishah, (may Allah be pleased with her), relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-’Aas (May Allaah be pleased with them) heard the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) saying:

“It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Read and elevate (through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunyaa! For verily, your position in the Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!”

[Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmithee, saheeh]

The Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon) said:

“The Qur’an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.”

[An authentic hadith found in At-Tabaraanee, on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood]

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with him): ALLAH’s Apostle (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon) said,

“Not to wish to be the like except of two men. A man whom ALLAH has given the knowledge of the Book and he recites it during the hours of the night, and a man whom ALLAH has given wealth, and he spends it in charity during the night and the hours of the day.” Bukhari Volume 6, Book 61, Number 543

Narrated Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with him):

ALLAH’s Apostle (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon) said,

“The example of the person who knows the Qur’an by heart is like the owner of tied camels. If he keeps them tied, he will control them, but if he releases them, they will run away.” Bukhari Volume 6, Book 61, Number 549

Narrated Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon) said,

“It is a bad thing that some of you say, ‘I have forgotten such-and such verse of the Qur’an,’ for indeed, he has been caused (by ALLAH) to forget it. So you must keep on reciting the Qur’an because it escapes from the hearts of men faster than camel do.”

Bukhari Volume 6, Book 61, Number 550

Narrated Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon) said:

“The example of a believer who recites the Qur’an and acts on it, like a citron which tastes nice and smells nice. And the example of a believer who does not recite the Qur’an but acts on it, is like a date which tastes good but has no smell. And the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like a Raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter And the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a colocynth which tastes bitter and has a bad smell.” Bukhari Volume 6, Book 61, Number 579

“And the Qur’an is a proof for you or against you.” [Muslim]

Aboo Umaamah relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“Read the Qur’an, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions.” [Muslim]

From these few Ayahs and Hadiths stated above we can conclude many great benefits of learning and teaching Quran:

  1. The best of all people are those who study, learn, memorize, act according to the Quran and teach it.

  2. Reciting, memorizing the Quran guides to that which is best.

  3. The Huffaz (Plural of Hafiz, the one that memorizes Quran by heart) are the inheritors of the Book whom Allaah (Glorified Is He The Most High) Has chosen from amongst His servants.

  4. The rewards of those who hold fast on the Quran are guaranteed and increased by Allaah (Glorified Is He The Most High).

  5. The more your recitation of the Quran in this Dunya increases the higher your position in the Paradise rises.

  6. The rewards of reciting Quran are multiplied.

  7. The reciters of Quran will be with the noble Angels in Paradise.

  8. The Huffaz of Quran will be interceded for by the Quran they hold in their hearts in the Day of the Judgment.

It is enough as a virtue for the Quran Hafiz to be determined among the People of Allaah (Glorified Is He The Most High) for they are the keepers of His Book and His religion.

The virtue that is given to the Hafiz of Quran is the greatest virtue ever. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala Loves His servant who recites Quran day and night and acts on to it. Therefore; studying Quran is one of the greatest deeds through which the servant gets closer to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala (Glorified Is He The Most High).
